It was Martin Luther King Jr. who once said “The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.” For educators, teaching is more than just ensuring that students learn. To be a successful educator of the highest caliber, teachers need to inspire and empower their students to strive toward success. But, this is easier said than done—there’s no magic formula. Even educators who go above and beyond may not reach all students or help them succeed academically. Therefore it is even more essential for parents to be involved at every level of their child’s learning experience, from the top to the bottom, from the left to the right. It begins with exercising your right to vote, voting for the best leadership, building and maintaining relationships with teachers and staff, understanding the curriculum and being a VOICE for all of it, and participating in the teaching of your child.
“Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education.” — Franklin D. Roosevelt Teachers help impart knowledge to students, but these professionals also convey the importance of using knowledge to better oneself and the world. This educational quote from Franklin D. Roosevelt shows us that learning and being informed are fundamental to helping safeguard rights and liberties, both within and beyond the classroom.
